I haven’t done it, yet, because replacement and proper adjustments take time to be done right.Ī long time ago I had a AT120sa on a Luxman DD turntable it was very nice but the shibata stylus was very expensive so I replaced it with the elliptical stylus. Did you feel a big improvement going to the blue?Īt one point I’ll try my two cartridges on the Carbon. My first impression, coming from the Shure to the Red, is that the Shure has a wider soundstage, with better instrument location and definition. Have you ever heard either of my cartridges with the Pro-Ject? Some say that the Shure is equivalent to the Ortofon Black, but I imagine that they are completely different beasts. Mine is still breaking in, and it is improving with usage. A lot of people prefer the latter to the Ortofon Red, but I am getting used to the Ortofon. Thanks again!Īs for the cartridge, I was using a Shure V15 Type III with a Jilco stylus and an Audio Technica AT120E with my Technics. If we can fix it with so little effort and money, Pro-Ject could have easily done it at the factory.īut now I am extremely happy to be able to finally enjoy it. I’ve owned many turntables of all levels and even the much cheaper Philips I had in my bedroom when I was a teenager didn’t vibrate like this. I was shocked at how much the motor vibrated. I wasn’t aware of the hum and I wouldn’t be surprised if the previous owner sold it because of it. I, too, bought mine second hand, with just 10 hours of use, for a very good price. My wife loved it, too, because of the red color and the friendlier appearance compared to the Technics I had before. But the motor hum was really spoiling it for me and I was already looking at the classifieds for another turntable. I loved how the Debut Carbon tracked and how it sounded. As has been pointed out the motor vibration can be solved if the TT is compatible with one of their add on power supplies which smooth the mains supply.

I've seen pictures of some new models in a Fremer show report so maybe they will be addressing the issues (but there is no guarantee). Debut Carbon Sales must be enormous in relation to RPM Carbon at £2.5K. Why didn't they fix it or completely redesign it? Probably because few who buy these complain and keeping this model out there is the basis for the companies profitability in the same way as the Rega P1 has generated the cash to finance development of better turntables up the range. Looks like they tried with the AC/DC thing but they must know it doesn't work. An obvious solution is a better motor but I imagine this would make the table unprofitable. Maybe at the lower level the Music Hall models have better isolation but I think they all cost a bit more than the Carbon. They obviously have better motors and isolation. If you buy a Project that costs between £2000 and £7500 you don't get issues. Somehow they never figured out a solution that kept to the required manufacturing cost.

The problem is knocking out a TT for a low price.
